Temporary dam breaches at Gold Ray site; strands workers on island
A temporary dam near Gold Ray Dam unexpectedly broke this morning, momentarily stranding several workers on an island and sending brown, turbulent water downriver.
The crew was working to breach a coffer dam holding back Tolo Slough on the south side of the Rogue River when the change in elevation of the water breached a portion of the dam barring the larger Kelly Slough on the north side.
Next state furlough day August 20
Once again, state offices will close for an imposed furlough day, and this time it’s next Friday, August 20.
The furlough day is the sixth of 10 closure dates the state has scheduled over the current two-year budget period. Each furlough day saves the state an estimated $2 million in personnel costs.
Oregon to receive $50 million more in "Hardest Hit" money
Oregon will receive another $50 million in “Hardest Hit” funds to help prevent home foreclosures.
This funding is dedicated to helping unemployed homeowners maintain their home-ownership with mortgage payment assistance while they’re looking for work.
Public Gathering for Public Good set for Friday

Alleged Washington rapist may be in Medford, authorities say
The King County sheriff's office in Washington says a man sought in the violent rape of woman last month may be in Medford. Authorities are looking for 51-year-old John Alan Carter. Late on July 26, a woman was lured to a house in Covington, southeast of Seattle, and sexually assaulted at knifepoint for several hours.
Robinson hosts Town Hall in CJ tonight, at debate tomorrow
Dr. Arthur Robinson, the Republican candidate to represent Oregon’s Fourth District in Congress, will host a Town Hall meeting at the County Building, at 102 South Redwood Highway, in Cave Junction tonight.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m.
Robinson, who appeared on the KAJO Wednesday Talk Show this morning, continues his public appearances with the first of two scheduled debates against Democratic incumbent Peter DeFazio tomorrow night.
Marine Officers Training on the Rogue
22 Marine law enforcement officers from 12 different agencies will encounter every challenge the Rogue River can muster this week.
The Marine Board’s drift boat training course, being conducted on the Rogue River this week, is the only one of its kind in the nation.
Camelot Breaks Ground Today
Camelot Theater breaks ground on its new, $2.2 million theater in Talent today at 1:00 p.m. The theater group hopes to be in the new facility by mid-May next year.
Ashland Police Consider Foot & Bike Patrols to Curb Thefts
Ashland Police are considering sending foot and bicycle patrols into the city’s Quiet Village to stem thefts and burglaries which have doubled in the last 30 days.
Two burglaries have been reported in the area, but most of the crimes are thefts from unlocked vehicles.
DeFazio Due at Fair & Town Halls Next Week
Congressman Peter DeFazio will speak at two town hall meetings and appear at the Josephine County Fair next Wednesday.
DeFazio, who is campaigning against Republican Arthur Robinson for what would be his 13th term representing Oregon, will be in Merlin for a noon town hall and a town hall in Cave Junction starting at 5:15 p.m.
