June Employment Numbers Up
Unemployment numbers for Josephine and Jackson Counties remain high but Josephine County unemployment is a full point lower than the same time last year. Jackson County is 9/10ths of point lower.

DUII Gets 15 Months in Prison
Robert Lee Guthrie Junior, 30 was sentenced to 15 months in prison in Josephine County Circuit Court this morning for driving under the influence of intoxicants. Guthrie was also sentenced to 24 months probation following incarceration, ordered to pay $3,494 in fines, restitution and assessments, and had his driver’s license revoked for life.

Thieves Hit Quality Used Cars
Early Sunday morning thieves stole five vehicles from Quality Used Cars at 1660 Northeast 7th Street. The thefts occurred sometime between 12:30 and 3:00am.

Claims for VA Benefits for PTSD Now Faster
New rules are in place to make it easier for veterans to claim post-traumatic stress disorder benefits, however, a spokes person for the Disable American Veterans in White City says vets need to know the claim still has to be proven.

Ashland School District Requires More Proof of Residnecy
The Ashland School Board voted unanimously approving new proof of residency rules. Last year officials discovered about 40 students illegally enrolled.

U.S. 101 Blocked by Landslide

A landslide at milepost 236 has blocked travel in both directions on U.S.101. There are detours in place to avoid the blockage in the North Bend area.

DUII Crash Inflicts Head Trauma on 22-Year Old
A 22-year old Central Point Woman suffered head trauma after her Olds Alero spun off the road and hit a utility pole Saturday night. The accident occurred in the 7000 block of Blackwell Road.

Black Bear Encounter Up 4-Fold
Eighteen black bears have been killed this year after trying to break into homes or causing damage to property from Ashland to Eagle Point to Grants Pass. The area averages about four such cases a year.

Couple Killed in Rollover on Applegate Road
18-year old Faith Marie Vock and her boyfriend, Doug Nelson, 20 were killed while sitting in the back of a sport utility vehicle without seat belts that veered off Upper Applegate Road Saturday, hitting a tree and rolling.
