Good Neighbor Day is tomorrow
Grants Pass Mayor Mike Murphy proclaimed tomorrow as National Good Neighbor Day during the Grants Pass City Council’s workshop session on Monday.

As part of Good Neighbor Day, Judy’s Flowers and Gifts will give away 10,000 roses, in bunches of a dozen each, starting at 8 a.m. tomorrow. The idea, florist Judy Samuelson said, is to keep one rose and give the remaining 11 away to other people, to spread friendship and be neighborly.

Commissioners to involve schools in appeal to continue payments
With further federal payments in lieu of taxes to help the local economy in jeopardy next year, the Josephine County Commissioners expressed intent to get local schools involved in the effort to reinstate the payments this morning.

This follows the Association of Oregon Counties’ board meeting, which Commissioner Dwight Ellis attended yesterday.

Drug trade violence has some on edge
Drug-trade violence in Mexico has some Mexicans living in southern Oregon worried.

Monica Perez is a manager at La Placita, an eight-store mini-mall on West Main Street in Medford.

The 38-year-old Perez told the Mail Tribune newspaper she has lived in Oregon for 14 years after growing up in Zamora, one of the most dangerous regions in Mexico.

Saturation patrol in Jackson County begins tomorrow
If you’re driving in the southern end of Jackson County tomorrow night and you notice more police on the roads, you’ll be seeing part of a saturation patrol effort by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Medford Police Department.

Veterans for Peace in studio with Scott tomorrow
Representatives from the local chapter of Veterans for Peace will be Scott Jorgensen’s guest on the KAJO Wednesday Talk Show tomorrow.

The veterans will talk about the current conflict in Afghanistan and their opposition to both, and may address the recent withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

Perez-Silva Emotionally Disturbed?
Jackson County prosecutor Terry Smith-Norton says the defense will argue Jose Perez-Silva, 35, was suffering from an extreme emotional disturbance when he stabbed and killed 32-year old Ana Berthan Meraz in May of 2005 along I-5 near Ashland.
