Six Times Increased Funding & Staffing for Medford’s Summer School
The Medford School District has increased staffing and funding for summer school by a factor of six in an effort to increase graduation rates.
The Board is scheduled to approve the 2014-15 budget tonight which includes $369,000 for the district’s summer program. The additional funding allowed for the hire of 25 teachers to provide classroom instruction and one on one tutoring to students needing to make up missed course work and complete graduation requirements.
Last summer about 330 students attended the summer session but this year the district is expecting between 800 and 1,000. If the seniors can complete their coursework by August 31st they’ll be part of the class of 2014.
Todd Bloomquist, Medford’s Director of Secondary Education, said Medford has a 67 percent graduation rate and this program attends to the needs of students having the hardest time getting there.
