Oregon State Police have received an ODOT grant to fund overtime enforcement on 18 sections of Oregon Highways including Highway 199, the Redwood Highway from milepost 14 through 24, and I-5 from milepost 70 to 80.

The highways were identified after a review of crash analysis that considered crash types, causes, dates, days of the week and time periods.

The enforcement will target contributing factors such as speed, failure to maintain a lane of travel, distracted driving, and driving under the influence.

Trooper Public Information Officer Lt. Gregg Hastings told us what this area will experience, “The Grants Pass office is going to receive 166 overtime hours to be funded by the grant and that’ll be about $10,000. What that’s going to do is allow us to put troopers on overtime in those selected sections of both Highway 199 and Interstate 5 so that we can try to target those violations.”

The goal for the Troopers and the Oregon Department of Transportation is to reduce number of roadway departure crashes by 20 percent.
