The “Dust Mask Bandit”, a man accused of robbing six banks in the mid-west coast, has been transferred to the Josephine County Jail to await trial for his alleged involvement in robbing the Home Federal Bank on Union Avenue on July 5, 2011.

The bank was robbed by a man wearing a bandana and a respirator mask who entered the bank, threatened a clerk with a handgun and then fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Federal authorities say the suspect, 30-year-old Clarence Joseph Lewis III, robbed several other banks in McKinleyville, Smith River and Yreka during a several month crime spree. Investigators dubbed him the Dust Mask Bandit due to the respirator mask the suspect wore in all of the robberies.

Lewis surrendered in October of 2011 just days after authorities raided his home in Hoopa, Calif.

Lewis has been convicted of several of the robberies and until his transfer to Josephine County was serving multiple sentences in the Englewood Federal Correctional Institution in Colorado.
