Grants Pass’s Firewise Garden Complete
The Grants Pass Firewise Garden is now complete on the west side of the Hillcrest Public Safety Station at 199 Northwest Hillcrest Drive.
Part of the Firewise Community program, the garden displays fire resistant plants, suitable for landscaping around homes in place of fire prone plants and still create a beautiful landscape.
90 percent of homes lost to wildfires are the result of fire embers and the plants in the garden play a big role in maintaining a home’s protection from those embers.
The garden contains five sections. Each section displays a different theme including fire resistant planting for full sun, partial sun, low water usage and privacy screening. There is also a section displaying fire prone plants not recommended for use close to the home. Informative signs describe each section.
The goal of the Firewise Program and the garden is to create safer neighborhoods by reducing wildfire risk. The funding for the garden came from several grants.
