Man changing flat tire killed by semi-truck near Canyonville
A 43-year-old Riddle Man was killed by a semi-truck while he was changing a flat tire along the I-5 northbound shoulder two miles north of Canyonville at approximately 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Oregon State Police troopers say Wes Roy Woods experienced the flat and pulled his vehicle to the side of the road and he knelt down on the fog line to repair the flat on the left side of the vehicle. A short time later, a commercial semi-truck driven by Gurmail S. Dhillon of British Columbia was traveling in the right-hand lane northbound, saw Woods and attempted to swerve. The front of the truck missed Woods but the rear tires of the truck rolled over Woods’ legs.
Woods was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg where he died about an hour later. Dhillon is cooperating with authorities and no charges have been filed.
Authorities warn drivers to be extremely careful when repairing a flat on a highway and to pull the car slowly off the highway as far off the pavement as possible and to utilize emergency flashers.
