Rural Metro Crews Douse Grass Fire on North Applegate Road near Murphy
A green pasture mixed with dry grass allowed for an unattended open burn to escape control in the Murphy area yesterday. On Tuesday at 12:58 p.m., Rural Metro Fire Department responded to the grass fire in the 9300-block of North Applegate Road. Fanned by typical afternoon winds and a lack of on-site capabilities to maintain containment, the fire spread to approximately 1/4-acre. There was no structural threat, but the occupant requested assistance from Rural Metro to extinguish the blaze. Rural Metro officials said spring land-clearing during open burn season comes with a list of reminders to ensure burning projects remain safe and successful. Construct a vegetation-free ring down to dirt around the burn pile to lessen the chance for escape. Have a reliable water source on site. Have a shovel or other tools on site to take action in case of spread. Carry a charged cell phone to call 9-1-1 quickly if needed. Burn only in the morning to avoid afternoon winds. Stay in attendance of the burn. Fully extinguish ash with water, then check for heat with bare hands.

State Fire Marshal Urges Oregonians to Create Defensible Space around Homes
News Image
Last year, Oregon had one of the most destructive fire seasons in its history. With 1.9 million acres burned, communities were tested and lives were changed. But amid the devastation, there were also stories of resilience -- homes that stood strong because they had defensible space. As May marks "Wildfire Awareness Month," the Oregon State Fire Marshal is urging Oregonians to act now. With the possibility of another challenging fire season ahead, preparing your home could make all the difference. Start with small changes that have a big impact. Space and prune trees to prevent fires from climbing into canopies. Remove leaves, pine needles, bark mulch and other debris within 100 feet of structures or up to your property line. Clean roofs and gutters of flammable debris. Move combustible materials -- like mulch and firewood -- away from your home. Keep plants trimmed and clear of dead material, especially near the house. Avoid planting directly under eaves -- leave at least a five-foot buffer. As you clean up your yard, be mindful about disposal. Consider chipping, composting or recycling. If burning is necessary, always follow local rules. Debris burns that get out of control are the leading cause of human-caused wildfires in Oregon.
