For Safety and Courtesy, Don’t “Fogetaboutit”

Just about every driver has experienced the displeasure and safety-challenge of near-blindness caused by high-beams or fog lamps from an approaching or following vehicle. “We” have likely been on the offending side of this safety and courtesy oversight as well.

Complaints and confessions aside, let us redouble our commitment to safety and courtesy and forgo the additional pain of a potential $1,000 fine.

According to state law, both high-beam headlight systems and fog lamps must adhere to the same road rules. These lights must be dimmed or switched off within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle and within 350 feet when following a vehicle. Lights can only be white or yellow in color. State law prohibits blue-colored fog lamps. Additionally, fog lamps are required to be turned off during normal visibility conditions.
